The subabul is a species of Acacia without thorns. It is fast growing and the compound leaves make it suitable for bonsai as each leaflet gives the impression of being a very small leaf. It is a prolific grower and needs careful attention to pruning. Its branches are also rather stiff and do not take kindly to wiring.

This tree is being grown to resemble the flat topped thorn trees of the deserts. It has an interesting natural hollow half way up the trunk which gives it character.

Future development will aim at developing finer secondary and tertiary branches to fill out the canopy and careful wiring of young growth to refine the flat topped style.
